The Terex Woodsman Biomass chipper was designed to process today's wood. The emphasis is now on chipping everything: we can chip a large top, a pile of brush and the short end cuts. In the past these materials were left behind because the disc chippers struggled to process it. Today the Terex Woodsman Biomass product line can chip the entire tree.
One of the things that is changing our market is the cost of energy. In the past a logging operator would pull out a log and leave all of the tops and branches behind. Today all that fibre can also be used for clean renewable energy.
The majority of chippers are put in-service to produce chips, for either paper mills or fuel for a burner, though there are many other markets that chippers also serve. Right-away clearing, fire control, bug and disease management, lot clearing and mulch production.
Today there are two styles of chippers on the market : Disc and Drum
Disc Style:
Disc Style have been in use since the mid 1970s, designed to chip a whole tree. They produce a paper quality chip, it has it limitations as the disc cuts only on half of its flat surface
and that limits the opening size. Because the disc also sits on a angle there is a larger area (dead space) between the feed roll and the chipper disc. By design this style does not perform well when feeding tops and short wood.
Drum Style:
Terex® Woodsman chippers are drum style. The drum chipper cuts on the surface of the drum; therefore there are no limitations as to how wide the opening is. Also with the drum style chipper the feed roll can cut close to the chipper. With no dead space the drum chipper can easily chip the material that disc chippers have to leave behind. While historically drum chippers were used for volume reduction, as Designs have improved they can now also produce a paper quality chip.
